This week, as I was watching conference on the internet, I was especially impressed with the talk by Elder Packer concerning mothers and daughters. WOW. So, I totally suck as a mom! Well, not really but sometimes. I love my daughters dearly, and they are wonderfully unique people. My mom is a great mom, and as much as I said I would never raise my kids the way I was raised, I do a lot of the same things. My mom is an excellent example of obedience to the Lord. I'm a whiner and complainer. I don't like getting up to go to church. I don't like interrupting my family time for mutual, or scouts, or whatever calling I have. I don't like sitting in sacrament meeting or relief society when I think I could go home and pray about the same things and get the same answers. My mom isn't like that. She set a wonderful example for my brother and I. She loves going to church, without complaint. She fulfills her callings without question. She follows the commandments without wavering. She is a wonderful example of the things I should be doing. But, I don't, because I'm a whiner. I don't want that to be my example to my daughters. I don't want them to be whiners about church. I don't want them to blow off scriptures, or prayers, or mutual, for other things. So, I have to quit being a whiner, and become a do-er. Jordan has been an enormous example to me. She goes to church almost every Sunday without complaint. She wants to be there and she loves to be there. Haiden loves to go to church, and is often upset if she doesn't get to go. (right now we are at 9 am and she likes to sleep in.) They are wonderful examples for me, their mother! I appreciate my mom teaching me about modesty and appropriate dress and actions. Because of that, I have been able to teach my daughters the same things. I am so proud of Jordan when she turns off the TV or a movie because the girls (yes, Disney channel) are dressed inappropriately. I had the opportunity to shop with her a few weeks ago, and she is very conscious of the length of shirts, shorts, and skirts, as well as if the fronts dip low or they have sleeves. She and Haiden are wonderful girls, who will eventually turn into wonderful young women. I pray they do better than me!
